Detroit Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men senior Pierre Brooks II looks to pass against Detroit Osborn on Friday.

Posted February 12, 2021

Division 4 boys basketball state championship contender Detroit Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Detroit Public School League foe Detroit Osborn 68-48 on Friday, Feb. 12, at Douglass.

Osborn kept the game close through the first three quarters. Douglass led 14-12 after one quarter, 25-23 at half, and 41-38 after three quarters.

Mr. Basketball candidate Pierre Brooks II took charge in the second half, scoring 28 of his 40 points – several on spectacular dunks.

Unlike many of his contemporaries this season, Brooks stayed with his high school for his senior year, rather than leaving for an out-of-state prep school.

Brooks, who signed with Michigan State University, has hopes of leading his team to a PSL title and a state championship.

Douglass (2-0) competed in Division 2 last season, advancing to the district final when the season was cancelled due to the pandemic. Douglass will be competing in Division 4 this year after ending its co-op arrangement with Detroit Dr Benjamin Carson Science & Medicine high school.

Senior Javantae Randle, 6-foot-10-inch, scored 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in the victory against Osborn (0-1).

Douglass travels to Grand Rapids Union today (Feb. 13) for the Red Hawk Showcase, playing Benton Harbor.
